Dad, One Week Later ❤️
There are moments in life that change you forever. One week ago, my world changed.
I still wake up some mornings expecting to hear my phone ring or thinking I should call my dad. For just a second, everything feels normal. Then reality comes rushing back, and
I remember he’s gone.
I don’t think anyone can truly prepare you for losing a parent.
My dad was only 70 years old. He wasn’t someone who spent his life battling heart disease. He was active, funny, kind, and always had that genuine smile that made everyone around him feel welcome. The kind of smile you can’t fake.
He loved people. He didn’t judge people. He could sit down with just about anyone and make them feel like a friend. That’s who he was.
When I got the call to get to the hospital, I already knew in my heart something was terribly wrong. My brother wouldn’t answer my question.
I asked him, “Is Dad alive?”
He couldn’t say the words.
Sometimes silence tells you everything.
I remember screaming so loud the neighbors came outside. I don’t even remember deciding to scream. It just happened. My heart broke before my mind could catch up.
Since then, I’ve learned that grief doesn’t come in neat little stages.
It sneaks up on you. I’ll be driving. I’ll see something funny. I’ll hear a song. I’ll catch myself thinking, “I need to tell Dad about this.”
And then I remember.
Every single time. The hardest part is knowing there won’t be another conversation.
No more hugs.
No more hearing him laugh.
No more seeing that smile that always made me feel like everything was going to be okay.
Looking back through our wedding photos has become something I treasure.
Those pictures captured him exactly as I want to remember him. Happy. Proud.
Standing beside me on one of the biggest days of my life. He loved that picture of us dancing together. So do I. More than ever.
If there’s one thing this past week has taught me, it’s this…
Take the pictures.
Record the videos.
Give the hugs.
Say “I love you.”
Don’t wait for birthdays or holidays.
Don’t assume there will always be another chance.
Because sometimes an ordinary morning becomes the day that changes everything.
I know the next weeks and months won’t be easy.
There are still so many unanswered questions.
There are still tears that come when I least expect them.
But I’m also incredibly grateful.
Grateful that my dad got to see me turn my life around.
Grateful that he met Rick.
Grateful that he knew I was happy.
Grateful that he knew how much I loved him.
That’s something no one can ever take away.
Dad…I miss you more than words could ever explain.
Thank you for believing in me.
Thank you for loving me through every season of my life.
I hope you knew just how proud I was to call you my dad.
Until we meet again.
I love you forever. ❤️
❤️ If you’re reading this…
If you’re lucky enough to still have your parents, call them today.
Not tomorrow.
Not next week.
Today.
Tell them you love them. You’ll never regret making that call.
